Question 88

Section 33: Lord’s Day 33

Of how many parts doth the true conversion of man consist?

Of two parts; of the mortification of the old, and of the quickening of the new man.a

  1. a. Romans 6:4–6; Ephesians 4:22–23; Colossians 3:5; 1 Corinthians 5:7

    Romans 6:4–6

    6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 6:5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

    6:4 We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may walk in newness of life. 6:5 For if we have been united with Him like this in His death, we will certainly also be united with Him in His resurrection. 6:6 We know that our old self was crucified with Him so that the body of sin might be rendered powerless, that we should no longer be slaves to sin.

    Ephesians 4:22–23

    4:22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; 4:23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

    4:22 to put off your former way of life, your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 4:23 to be renewed in the spirit of your minds;

    Colossians 3:5

    3:5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

    3:5 Put to death, therefore, the components of your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, and greed, which is idolatry.

    1 Corinthians 5:7

    5:7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:

    5:7 Get rid of the old leaven, that you may be a new unleavened batch, as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.
