What is thy only comfort in life and death?

That I with body and soul,a both in life and death,b am not my own, but belong unto my faithful Saviour Jesus Christ,c who, with his precious blood,d hath fully satisfied for all my sins,e and delivered me from all the power of the devil;f and so preserves me that without the will of my heavenly Father,g not a hair can fall from my head;h yea, that all things must be subservient to my salvation,i and therefore, by his holy spirit, he also assures me of eternal life,j and makes me sincerely willing and ready henceforth, to live unto him.k

  1. a. 1 Corinthians 6:19–20

    1 Corinthians 6:19–20

6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 6:20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

6:19 Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 6:20 you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God with your body.

  2. b. Romans 14:7–9

    Romans 14:7–9

14:7 For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself. 14:8 For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord’s. 14:9 For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living.

14:7 For none of us lives to himself alone, and none of us dies to himself alone. 14:8 If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. 14:9 For this reason Christ died and returned to life, that He might be the Lord of both the dead and the living.

    Hebrews 2:14–15

2:14 Now since the children have flesh and blood, He too shared in their humanity, so that by His death He might destroy him who holds the power of death, that is, the devil, 2:15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.
