Question 76
Section 28: Lord’s Day 28
What is it then to eat the crucified body, and drink the shed blood of Christ?
It is not only to embrace with a believing heart all the sufferings and death of Christ, and thereby to obtain the pardon of sin, and life eternal;a but also, besides that, to become more and more united to his sacred body, by the Holy Ghost, who dwells both in Christ and in us:b so that we, though Christ is in heavenc and we on earth, are notwithstanding “Flesh of his flesh, and bone of his bone;”d and that we live, and are governed for ever by one spirit, as members of the same body are by one soul.e
a. John 6:35, 40, 47–48, 50–51, 53–54
John 6:35; John 6:40; John 6:47–48; John 6:50–51; John 6:53–54
6:35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. 6:40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day. 6:47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. 6:48 I am that bread of life. 6:50 This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. 6:51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. 6:53 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. 6:54 Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
6:35 Jesus answered, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me will never hunger, and whoever believes in Me will never thirst. 6:40 For it is My Father's will that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day." 6:47 Truly, truly, I tell you, he who believes has eternal life. 6:48 I am the bread of life. 6:50 This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that anyone may eat of it and not die. 6:51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And this bread, which I will give for the life of the world, is My flesh." 6:53 So Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of Man, you have no life in you. 6:54 Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.

b. John 6:55–56
John 6:55–56
6:55 For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. 6:56 He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.
6:55 For My flesh is real food, and My blood is real drink. 6:56 Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood remains in Me, and I in him.

c. Acts 3:21; 1:9–11; 1 Corinthians 11:26
Acts 3:21
3:21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.
3:21 Heaven must take Him in until the time comes for the restoration of all things, which God announced long ago through His holy prophets.
Acts 1:9–11
1:9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. 1:10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; 1:11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.
1:9 After He had said this, they watched as He was taken up, and a cloud hid Him from their sight. 1:10 They were looking intently into the sky as He was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 1:11 "Men of Galilee," they said, "why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen Him go into heaven."
1 Corinthians 11:26
11:26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.
11:26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until He comes.

d. Ephesians 5:29–32; 1 Corinthians 6:15, 17, 19; 1 John 3:24
Ephesians 5:29–32
5:29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: 5:30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. 5:31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. 5:32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
5:29 Indeed, no one ever hated his own body, but he nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church. 5:30 For we are members of His body. 5:31 "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." 5:32 This mystery is profound, but I am speaking about Christ and the church.
1 Corinthians 6:15; 1 Corinthians 6:17; 1 Corinthians 6:19
6:15 Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid. 6:17 But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit. 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
6:15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! 6:17 But he who unites himself with the Lord is one with Him in spirit. 6:19 Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;
1 John 3:24
3:24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
3:24 Whoever keeps His commandments remains in God, and God in him. And by this we know that He remains in us: by the Spirit He has given us.

e. John 6:56–58; Ephesians 4:15–16
John 6:56–58
6:56 He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. 6:57 As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. 6:58 This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.
6:56 Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood remains in Me, and I in him. 6:57 Just as the living Father sent Me and I live because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on Me will live because of Me. 6:58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your fathers, who ate the manna and died, the one who eats this bread will live forever."
Ephesians 4:15–16
4:15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: 4:16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
4:15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into Christ Himself, who is the head. 4:16 From Him the whole body, fitted and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love through the work of each individual part.
